Food Services for Emergency Services… all Underground

The Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) is the national emergency service of Israel – dispatching EMTs, ambulances, even an intensive care BUS to sites immediately after missile attacks.

In a bunker three floors below ground, staff monitor phones and computers 24/7, calculating missile trajectories down to the neighborhood, and alerting their community of volunteers that danger is en route. (Amazingly, the organization has roughly 3,400 staff, and 39,000 volunteers working for them.)

During periods of war-time footing (and we are definitely in one right now), food is provided for those manning the phones. I didn’t eat any… so can’t comment on the flavor… but it looked like serviceable fuel for those servicing the communities.

Rice and stewed olives and peppers in tomato sauce… piles of bread… some kind of chow mein stir fry with vegetables, and tubs and tubs of dips and fresh salads.

When you’re working all day and night, you usually don’t care what it is, as long as it’s free, plentiful, and close.

Fuel under fire, in this case, is the name of the game.
